I put photos of the kids in sketchbook app by autodesk and sketch on a layer above the photo- it's essentially tracing the picture. It's what I do for mindless fun- it's my "angry birds" or "Pinterest".
Hey Leah:-) The app has layers. So I set the photo as the bottom layer. And on the second layer i trace and sometimes highlight. Then I knock out the picture layer and insert a solid color layer. It's fuuuun! Though I will say I'm sad that auto desk found out that their free app was super awesome. They discontinued the app on the new iOS and so when I updated my iOS and I had to delete some apps to free up some memory when I reloaded the app I couldn't find it. The new auto desk app isn't as good. But you can still do layers.

How do you do this? Trace and then wash everything out?

Wow! You talent abounds. I'll have to give it a go. Maybe forcing some art in my life. ;)
Do you want me to post a tutorial?
The app is more fleshed out on the iPad. The iPhone app has less "tricks"
Would you?! That would be fun!
I don't have an i phone. But I have the app. :)
I'll work on it:-)
