Fun things to do in San Diego without kids

I know this post may come out of left field but my sister has a friend traveling to San Diego soon and asked me to put together a list- and since my blog is basically a nice place to store useful information that I may or may not need on the future I thought- what the heck.

Fun things to do in San Diego without kids

Point loma tide pools at low tide/Carbrillo monument.
Renting beach cruisers and biking around mission bay and crown pointe or renting paddle boards and doing the bay that way.
Old towne(located between mission bay and fashion valley) shops and history.
Children's pool@ la jolla (pronounced la Hoya). The city built a sea wall arm to protect a portion of the beach so that kids could swim peacefully away from big pacific waves- but then seals started having babies there- lots of seals. so now there are also sharks near there too. Nice to observe the seals but not to swim.
We swam in at pacific beach beaches. Not so touristy(like mission beach- which is good for souvenirs and tshirts for kids)
Coronado has a beautiful beach
Embarcadero is nice for a stroll.
I think if I were childless in San Diego I'd do a bit of thrift store shopping. Pacific beach has a few on grand(or garnet?) and la jolla is super rich so any thrift stores I. Lajoa would be treasure troves. I once found a bcbg floor length skirt at a la jolla shop.
Beautiful church for Sunday mass is immaculata- on USD campus. Now- there are a lot of universities in San Diego. USD is catholic. UCSD isn't. SDSU isn't either. But immaculata is located in the middle of USD's hillside campus- and is where George was baptized. It has beautiful mosaic stations. And the music is usually good.
Oh man- there is this church in little Italy- that is over the top Italian. The art and decoration are a little heavy handed but it's pretty cool. I think it's called OL of the rosary.
Of course the wild animal park is cool- but I'd miss my kids there something awful.
Mission trails out in santee- good hiking. But probably hot in summer as it is on the desert side of SD.
The old San Diego mission- blessed junipero Serra founded a mission here: history and views from the hillside.
Mount Soledad : hill with a giant cross on top: has awesome views as well.
Balboa park is nice- old globe theater is like Shakespeare's theater hosts some good shows.
And also balboa has free organ concerts in an amphitheater on Sundays but check that- may have changed. And I recall that certain museums in the park were free on Thursdays? Or Tuesdays? Worth a check on that as well.
Drive in movie- if that still exists - in east San Diego. We went to a drive in double feature- little kids watched nemo and went to sleep before pirates of the carribean came on so we could watch.

Restaurants-
Roberto's for rolled tacos or chicken burritos(a chain so there are Roberto's located lots of places) go ahead and pay extra for their guac. #wortheverypenny. Roberto's is drive thru mex
Taco surf(restaurant on mission bay blvd. in pacific beach)
There is this great Mexican restaurant in old town- makes their own tortillas- it starts with an F I think- fandango? Anyhow- REALLY good and fancier (fancier than taco surf and way fancier than Roberto's but flavor is just as good) sit down mex.
Are there restaurants other than Mexican in San Diego? Probably. I just wasn't as interested in them- so they don't stick to memory. I vaguely recall a fish company near the embarcadero that may have been good and maybe a BBQ place in ocean beach.
Oh- wait- breakfast. The broken yolk. Hands down the best breakfast place I've been to...ever. Maybe except for the ritz breakfast buffet. But broken yolk is a very close second.
I Forgot Jamba Juice- gasp! It's a smoothie bar that is super yum.
Pick a restaurant on the boardwalk and eat but more importantly- people watch. I think there was a restaurant on the boardwalk called "the green flash" which reminds me that getting food to go from Roberto's and eating on the beach to watch the sunset is memorable. People often clap once the sun completes it's setting. And the green flash happens *just* as the sun is dropping under the horizon- the sun comes through the water- or that's my theory.

Note- bring a sweater. San Diego nights are chilly. It's because the pacific is chilly. The water is SO much colder than and Atlantic. And so the wind coming off the water at night gives a chill to the air. That combined with the low humidity makes for a cooler night. I really enjoyed this aspect of San Diego. Layering is the way to go.
San Diego, like seattle- has low humidity and no bugs. It makes for such an enjoyable outdoors experience- really enjoyable. No sweating or swatting.
