three of the houses that ran out of candy gave out slim jims, hot cocoa, and $5 bills.  on the way out of the $5 bill's street i yelled up to the house that they were the kids' favorite house that night and that we would surely come back next year.  the woman yelled back "and we will have TONS of candy!"
kids just counted all their candy and are waiting to say the rosary.  it's our new halloween tradition since we learned about it from homeschool friends last year.  in the past people would walk to neighbors houses on the "day of the dead" and the neighbors would hand out "soul cakes" in exchange for prayers for the repose of the souls of their  dearly departed.
so, may the souls of all our neighbors' dearly departed rest in peace.

oooh, and i particularly liked this interview on the history of halloween and the catholic church.
and during the rosary i asked all the kids to remember our neighbor's deceased family members and henry said, "yeah, especially the guy who gave us the $5 bill!"
