birthdays and falling off the no-sugar wagon

i don't mess around. i am not going to voluntarily fall off the no-
sugar wagon for something like oreos or a lollipop or anything as holy as honey sweetened gluten free cake. when i fall off, i fall hard-
it tastes good, it hurts later, and i spend the next week getting
bumped and bruised trying my darndest to clamber back on and reclaim
my comfortable and happy place on the sugar-free, joint-stiffness
free, hangover-feeling free wagon.
i guess i should have started my anti-group B strep diet after henry's birthday.

for henry's birthday yesterday i had the team help me make cherry pie(we had three cherry de-pitters) and rocky road ice cream(one stirrer and one bowl licker). it was originally going to be chocolate but
henry said he liked rocky road so after the chocolate swirled in the
machine...

...and became like softserve ice cream i mixed in dark chocolate
covered almonds and marshmallows before storing it in the freezer to
solidify it.

it was not too hard when i scooped it this morning-as
homemade ice cream usually becomes a brick if it spends too long in
the freezer. i usually add some alcohol as an "anti-freeze" type
agent but i didn't have any bailey's so i just took the risk.
the chocolate ice cream recipe is here
of course i didn't measure the dark chocolate covered almonds or marshmallows- i'm kind of an expert when it comes to knowing just how much junk ice cream can take inside of it before it becomes obscene- and i stopped my hand a smidgeon this side of obscene.

we went out to eat last night and had dessert out so we decided to eat
it for breakfast this morning. move over wheeties- this is the new
breakfast of champions. i used this opportunity to do an unofficial
glucose tolerance test. i wonder if this plate has the same amount of
sugar in it as that horrible orange drink. i do know that it tastes a
whole heck of alot better- that is for sure. and we'll see how my
body handles it in an hour.

cheers henry. many happy returns.

crust recipe is here (i used the "all-butter crust for sweet and savoury pies"- although i added a drop or two of almond extract)
filling recipe is here but i didn't measure- i sort of eyeballed it and it seemed ok. i couldn't find my rolling pin so i used an unfinished bottle of merlot.
i love making lattice pies.

samantha loves to crimp the edges.
