to alabama- escaping no A/C

we stopped in rome on the way and went hiking on lavender mountain.

even though the house was air conditioned i sweat buckets while helping put up creamed corn. 2 bushels- one was silver queen and the other was field corn. all together we shucked and creamed 128 ears. my pan is the one on the left:) chris' mom set to cooking and freezing it for thanksgiving and other times throughout the year. she said it'll probably last 2 years- which is good because it's alot of work! i love their family's creamed corn. i was raised on the canned creamed corn that has alot of sugar in it so when i first tasted their creamed corn i thought "there is something missing". but since then i've come to prefer it to canned creamed corn. same with their corn bread. i was raised on jiffy - it's cakiness and sugariness. like corn cake or something. but i have definitely come to love the corn bread without sugar, all crumbly, made with bacon grease in cast iron baked in a HOT oven. yum!

so- i mentioned the A/C wasn't working. it fritzed friday evening sometime. by saturday 10 am the house was a sweltering box. i packed up the kids and headed to alabama in the cold cold A/C of the car. chris stayed behind to work at the office and during his off time tinker with the A/C. saturday night when he got back from work he texted to say the house was 91 degrees!

on sunday he took apart the A/C using the camera to take pictures of the process- as future reference for when he put it back together again. he found the broken part, bought it on monday morning before work, and fixed it monday night. $20. nice. so we stayed a bit to play with the bechen's and then came back last night sometime.

and this morning we met christina, mike, and mariana at lake lanier for a swim. i am SO glad they are close!
