we had jocelyn and her family over today to catch the varicella. i think it's funny the reactions i'm getting from people. older people will say, "why would you want to do that?" chicken pox is something that was as common to them as the common cold. it would come to them eventually. not so anymore. kids are vaccinated- which will wear off- and then where are they? they are adults living in fear of a virus that is pretty inocuous when contracted as a child.
so today's child grows up. the vaccination wears off and they don't go get a booster. if the men get it, they could be sterilized by the severity of the virus. women need to get it so they can pass on the resistance to their babies so they can fight it off for the first few months of life. if pregnant women get it they could have babies with birth defects.
so, why would i willingly give my kids chicken pox?
the same reason i make them eat food they don't like but is good for them. i know in the long run, it'll be good for their health and it'll be a bullet that they won't have to dodge in future years.
