despite the fact that there was a hurricane off the coast, we had a beautiful day at virginia beach. the water was closed for swimming- you could only go in ankle deep, but our lifeguard made it clear that he'd rather save people than constantly enforce that rule. we joked that the kids had swum shoulder deep in similar conditions when we lived in san diego. the virginia beach head lifeguard probably just didn't want his guards to spend their day saving a bunch of hillbillies who didn't know how to handle a rip current so they just closed it out. it was funny to see west coast waves on the east coast. the surfers were out en force to experience this rarity. the background of the picture of mary jane shows a nice wave. chris just kept pointing them out and mentally salivating.
