i love it when i find a book thats ideals come to life in a movie. it's kind of like pairing wine with a nice meal. earlier this summer i read a book called last child in the woods- saving our children from nature defecit disorder by robert louv. i really liked the book. though he just researched and brought the studies forward that proved what i already knew, i was shocked at many of his findings. i knew kids weren't playing outside as much anymore. i knew home owners associations, tv, and over packed schedules were to blame. i didn't know that parents were scared of the woods. i didn't know that at the same time team soccer was increasing it's numbers, childhood obesity was increasing as well.
just last week i rented a movie on itunes- something i probably won't do again. they said that i'd have it for 28 days-so i was shocked that i found it expired the next day. the kids really wanted to watch it again. it's a sweet little movie called the fox and the child directed by luc jacquet.
i loved it. the kids loved it. i don't know where the girl lives but i'd LOVE to live there. the funny thing is it paired with a series that i've been reading to the kids. the redwall series by brian jacques. the animals who are depicted in the books were all- well most all of them- found in this movie. so the kids got to see how each of the animals behaves in real life. the book and the movie really have inspired me to spend ALOT of time outdoors with the kids.
