any day now

i've noticed a trend fairly recently involving women who are approaching their due date. starting at about 34 weeks or maybe a skosh later the preggers will announce that the "doctor says 'any day now". i never fail to respond with nodding and smiling. because on the inside i'm wondering, "what makes them say that? and do they know what they are doing to this poor woman?" i guess it comes from being notorious for going post dates with all of mine but here's my assumption.
preggers woman comes into the office. she's uncomfortable, refluxing, tossing all night, panting all day.
"doctor, how much longer? i can't stand it much longer." she'll wait for the answer with pititful puppydog eyes.
and the doctor, partly out of mercy and partly because he lacks the inability to say three simple words, "I don't know" will say "any day now!"
and BAM, the effect has taken hold. that poor woman will wake every morning on pins and needles wondering if today is the day- nay, praying that today is the day until she's gotten within a week of her due date.
now the lovely doctor, after he's dropped comments all along the line about "nothing good happening after 40 weeks", can come dashing in for the heroic rescue!
"i'll save you my darling. just come into the hospital tomorrow and we'll start the induction. never mind your body is not ready."
what if some women's bodies are meant to house the babes for a little longer than others? what if the whole of america is falling for this salvation routine and we're filling our homes with kids that we're constantly pushing from point a to point be to point c. prodding to jump through hoop 1 to hoop 2 to hoop 3. kids who can fit comfortably into our perfect cookie cutter life.
