picture study- The Hülsenbeck Children by Philipp Otto Runge

This morning I received a beautiful book, 1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die, from a friend Thanks Lisa!  And it came at such a great time! Last night at Scholé a member shared how they did a picture study in school earlier that day.  She described what a picture study was- the kids study a picture of a painting for 3 minutes and then they close the book and share as many details of the painting that they can.  The following is the collection of their observations.

F- There is a girl and a boy and a baby

MJ- the boy is wearing green

G- they are playing a make-believe game.

MJ- no they weren’t

G- yeah they were- they were pulling that wagon and the boy was waving a stick

F- There were sunflowers

MJ- There was a rock on the floor

G- There are three sunflowers

F- There are houses in the background

MJ- There was a fence

G- it was a farm

F- There was a fern

MJ- I think there were three girls.

G- The baby was sitting in a wagon

F- There was a field in the background

MJ- they were playing with sticks

G- they were acting like knights- standing up

F- It was daytime

MJ- one girl had red shoes.

G- the person pulling the wagon had a white dress.

F- the baby had a red dress.

MJ- the baby was bald

G- no the baby wasn’t!

F- the baby was NOT bald.

G- the baby was reclining on a green blanket in the wagon.

F- One girl was wearing a green suit.

G- it’s a procession- the baby is in the back, the white dress person is in the middle and the green suit person is in the front.

F- They were happy and they looked like dolls with pink faces.

MJ- the baby was fat

F- the girl in the green suit had red hair.

G- the green person was looking ahead - to the right .  The wagon person was looking back to the wagon and the baby was to the left.

F- the sun was behind a bush.

MJ- the sky was blue

G- the green girl had her stick and she was pointing it up as if to lead a charge.

F- the girl or boy in the white dress had blond hair.

G- they pretty much all had blond hair.

F- no they didn’t

J- yeah they did.

G- sunflowers were on the left.

F- the house nearby was on the right.
